“For thou art an HOLY people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.”   (Deuteronomy 7:6)   (Emphasis mine)

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.   (John 17:17)   (Emphasis mine)

The Hebrew verb “qadash” (to sanctify) carries the idea of “separation” or “setting apart” from the world in order to consecrate to God.  In the TANACH (Hebrew Bible) it could refer to the setting apart of people, places, days, seasons, and objects used for worship.

From “qadash” we derive the noun “saint” (a sanctified one) and the adjective “holy” (set apart for God).  The corresponding Greek word for setting apart is “hagiazo” (to sanctify).  In both Hebrew and Greek the idea is the same -- setting apart FROM the world TO God.

For the elect there are three phases of sanctification.  The first phase is the setting apart done by the Spirit at the chosen person's new birth.  Those born again are, by the Spirit, SET APART from those who are dead in trespasses and sins.

Those whom God has chosen, whom Christ has died for, are the ones whom the Spirit SETS APART.  Since new birth PRECEDES faith in (and obedience to) Christ, the order is always: FIRST -- Election, SECOND -- Sanctification of the Spirit, THIRD -- Faith in Christ.

“But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through SANCTIFICATION of the Spirit and belief of the truth:”   (2 Thessalonians 2:13)   (Emphasis mine)

“Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through SANCTIFICATION of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.”   (1 Peter 1:12)   (Emphasis mine)

The second phase of sanctification, for the elect, continues from the moment of their new birth through the end of their mortal life.  It is a PROCESS of putting to death (mortification) of the “old man” (the body of sin) and making alive (quickening) of the “new man” in Christ Jesus.

This process of dying to sin (and self) and living to God affects the whole man -- body and soul (intellect, affections and will).  In the first phase of sanctification (new birth) man is totally passive.  But in the second stage of sanctification, man cooperates with God in the process.

This process is performed by means of the Word of God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  Sinful lusts (desires) are more and more weakened and mortified.  Saving graces such as faith, prayer, worship, service, giving, love, joy and peace are more and more strengthened.

“And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”   (Galatians 5:24)

“Follow peace with all men, and HOLINESS, without which no man shall see the Lord:”   (Hebrews 12:14)  (Emphasis mine)

This process of sanctification NEVER results in sinless perfection in this life.  Why?  The remnants of sinful corruption still remain in the believer's mortal body.  This gives rise to a continual and irreconcilable war between the Spirit and the flesh in every believer.

“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”

(Galatians 5:17)

The most extensive treatment of this second phase of sanctification is given in Paul's Letter to the Romans, chapters 6 through 8.  Indwelling sin grieved and plagued the Apostle Paul, just as it does every true child of God.  Yet he fought it, and so must we.

“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”   (Romans 8:13-14)

Sometimes, the remaining sinful corruption for a time may get the upper hand and prevail.  But through the Spirit of God, the new nature (implanted at the new birth) will eventually overcome.  So the elect believer grows in grace, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

In this process, the written Word of God guides the elect believer.  The Law of God is his standard.  The commands of Christ demand his faithful obedience.

The third phase of “setting apart” occurs upon the physical death of the believer.  The soul is separated from its sinful, corrupt, mortal body.  It is made complete in HOLINESS.  It sins no more.  It is removed from all temptation to sin and no longer has any desire to do so.

The actions of a creature are to a great extent predetermined when God stamps upon it a particular “nature” at its creation.  The grace given at new creation (new birth) in this life, is not given uniformly, and thus, believers still sometimes sin.

But upon leaving their mortal bodies at physical death, the grace given will be CONSTANT.  The determination of the will shall always be for GOOD.  God so governs the inward feelings, desires and motives of saints in heaven, that they FREELY do the GOOD He commands.

Therefore, believers can look forward with joy to the time of their physical death.  It will be a time to leave this world of woe, of sorrow, of sin and of death.  Their earthly struggles with the world, the flesh and the devil will be over.

The love, joy and peace of the Spirit will be in fuller bloom on the other side of the grave.  We'll be home at last, safe at last, free at last -- with Jesus Christ our Lord.  Hallelujah!!!

Tulip Gems is a Calvinistic Baptist web site that honors Jesus Christ and provides a free Hyperinflation Survival Guide.  We offer free Bible Articles on several subjects, including Bible Nutrition , Creation Science versus Evolution Passover , The Great Commission and Tulip Calvinism

Which Bible can we trust? Which Bible is the most accurate? Why KJV only? Read our Which Bible series of articles for answers from both Scripture and history (including a Rebuttal of James White's book, The King James Only Controversy).

We also offer a well-documented Vietnam Veteran Story that illustrates the mercy of God.  The Vietnam Veteran Story, found on our Combat Vet page, comes from published accounts of Vietnam Veterans experiences, as well as this Vietnam Veterans experiences, told first hand.

Concerned about inflation leading to hyperinflation? Some say buy silver and gold coins. Others say it is evil to own silver and gold coins. What does the Bible teach us? Tulip Gems offers an Hyperinflation Survival Guide which provides a Biblical basis for ownership of silver and gold coins as an hedge against the horrors of hyperinflation.  Links to online vendors are also provided.

Will out of control government spending lead to hyperinflation, and possibly to a new world currency? Will a new world currency lead to the Mark of the Beast (666)? Will the Rapture occur before the Tribulation (Pre-Tribulational Rapture) or will the Rapture occur after the Tribulation (Post-Tribulational Rapture)? For Biblical answers, visit our
Mark of the Beast Explained page.

Will America come under nuclear attack? What does the Bible say? For reliable information on what to do in a nuclear attack, read our
Survive Nuclear Attack page. While many Calvinists shy away from Bible prophecy, we don't. For those who want Biblical guidance about the future, check out our Hyperinflation Survival Guide, Mark of the Beast Explained and Survive Nuclear Attack pages. Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke often about the events leading up to His Second Coming. Where our Good Shepherd leads, we may safely follow.

Who is Jesus Christ? Why KJV only? Why Home School your children? Jesus Christ is Lord and the KJV Bible is the Preserved Word of God in English.  Finally, Scripture gives us compelling reasons to Home School our children. One very important reason is to lead them to Our Passover Lamb. We recommend Christ-centered Home Schooling Curriculum.
