But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  To him be glory both now and forever.  Amen.

2 Peter 3:18

Why a Biblical Doctrine of Providence is Essential to our Legal System

In the Westminster Confession of Faith, Shorter Catechism, we read:

Q. 11. What are God's works of providence?

A. God's works of providence are his most holy, wise and powerful preserving and governing all his creatures, and all their actions.

Since God is the Creator, He is also the Sovereign (King) over all His Creation.  Therefore, His Law is to be obeyed.  When men and angels refuse to obey the Law of God, they bring God's judgment down upon themselves.

The very first book of the Bible, Genesis, clearly teaches that God is just and demands death for the breaking of his Law.  But God is also merciful to his elect people.

INNOCENT SUBSTITUTE

Therefore he has provided a way for the elect sinner to be forgiven, while still meeting the demands of God's justice.  The Doctrine of the Atonement means that an innocent substitute could be sacrificed in place of a guilty sinner.

The innocent substitute must be a male lamb without spot or blemish.  It's blood must be shed, for without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.  The Doctrine of the Atonement in the first five books of the Bible (Pentateuch) clearly points to the death of Christ on the Cross in the place of God's elect people.

Hand in hand with the Atonement is the Doctrine of Restitution.  The purpose of God's Law is to restore the criminal, to satisfy God's Justice and to make the victim whole.  Restitution is the act of restoring a victim to the condition he would have been in had he not been victimized by a criminal.

The Doctrine of the Atonement is our basic construct for Western Jurisprudence.  Our basic concepts of Legal Theory are found in the Pentateuch.

Our Christian Common Law is based on the Case Law of Moses and summarized in the Ten Commandments.  In the Case Law of Moses, we find the concepts of jurisdiction, equality, fault, vow, dominion and restitution all clearly set forth.

A CHANGE IN LAW

A different theological view has led to a radically different view of law and Christian statesmanship.  This Arminian school of thought, while professing to believe in God's Sovereignty, teaches that man has veto power over God in matters of salvation and civil government.

This view has unwittingly led to man's law being held supreme over God's Law in civil government.  Abortion, fornication, homosexuality, witchcraft, Islam, the false teaching of evolution versus creation are now all legally sanctioned in America.

Yet God is supreme and therefore, American is on God's death row, awaiting execution.  Only a sincere national repentance and return to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can ever hope to avert Divine Judgment on the sins of America.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.  (2 Chronicles 7:14)
