But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.
2 Peter 3:18
Ancient Civilizations and the Fate of America
Consider the ruins of ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Babylon, Greece and Rome. Their ancestors, soon after the Tower of Babel, built their cultures on the sinking sand of false religion and rebellion against the God of the Bible. Romans 1:21-25 tells us:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. (Romans 1:21-25)
The Holy Scriptures make it clear that these people rejected the knowledge of God soon after the Great Flood. Now their once mighty civilizations lie in ruins, often, physically, in sinking sand. This in itself is a reminder of our Lord's words in the Sermon on the Mount:
Matthew 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
Of course, our Lord is teaching a spiritual truth with a physical example. To disobey the Creator and Law-Giver is to build a house (or an entire civilization) without a firm foundation. It is to build on sinking sand.
FOUNDING FATHERS OF AMERICA
America was founded by men, who, by and large, were men who revered the Bible as the written Word of God. They correctly viewed English Common Law as firmly based on the Law of God revealed in the Bible—especially as set forth in Exodus and Deuteronomy.
This view was held by many godly pastors, jurists, and theologians who had gone on before them, such as Calvin, Knox, Rutherford, Gillespie, Cook, Blackstone and Mather. This was the view of John Witherspoon, president of New Jersey College (now Princeton University) who personally taught many of our Founding Fathers.
James Madison, chief architect of our American Constitution, and later a President of the United States, was a loyal student of Witherspoon. John Adams said of Witherspoon that he was "a son of liberty" but first and foremost Witherspoon was "a son of the Cross."
Several of our past Chief Justices of the Supreme Court (John Jay, Earl Warren, et al) stated in writing that they viewed our judicial system as firmly grounded on Christian Common Law.
America reaped God's blessings in material prosperity, military power, political stability, industrial growth, agricultural knowledge, scientific breakthroughs, advances in medicine, elimination of many diseases, improvements in transportation, communications, and an overall increase in the standard of living for most people.
BLESSINGS OF THE LAW OF GOD
This was a clear fulfillment of the promises of blessing for those who would keep God's Law as laid out clearly in Deuteronomy 28:
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.
Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.
Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.
Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.
The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.
And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.
And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
28:12 The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:
And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. (Deuteronomy 28:1-14)
CURSE OF THE LAW OF GOD
It therefore follows, that if America continues to turn away from the Law of God, and embraces pluralism, women's liberation from the authority of her father or husband and her role as "keeper at home", abortion (murder of innocent infants), homosexuality, fornication, and a host of other sins, that we will come under Divine Judgment:
But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store.
Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.
Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me. (Deuteronomy 28:15-20)
DeToqueville summed it up ver well. In the 19th Century, after visiting early America, he wrote, "America is great, because America is good. If America ever ceases to be good, it will cease to be great."
